Due to experiencing personal hard times, he turned to music and spirituality to improve his life. He wrote, produced and also financed his first independently released album, Kemistry. Before that, he was performing in a wedding band covering popular songs. Finally by 2001 he signed to Motown Records and they re-released the album in 2013. Since then he has become one of the most successful r&b soul singers in decades.
